Sam the snowman tells us the story of a young red-nosed reindeer who, after being ousted from the reindeer games because of his beaming honker, teams up with Hermey, an elf who wants to be a dentist, and Yukon Cornelius, the prospector. They run into the Abominable Snowman and find a whole island of misfit toys. Rudolph vows to see if he can get Santa to help the toys, and he goes back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. The Reviews for Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) 1080p

Wow,Reviewed byThe_OrendaVote: 7/10

After 40 years, the quintessential Rudolph story is still one of the first. Generations have seen this stop-motion movie made for television. Judging by the overall voting of the IMDb membership, time has been kind to Rudolph and his gang of misfits. But in reality, age is showing. You can only assume that our wise voters hold a torch to a show that we have all been born, raised with and watched throughout the generations. Who can blame them?

Sam the Snowman tells the story of Rudolph, son of the Donners and outcast by others because of his red-nose. He and an elf outcast join together to tackle the world, but it's is a little more complicated than they think.

Singing toys, crazy abominable snow monsters, lions with wings ... and an elf named Hermey. Need I say more? I think Rudolph still holds to this day, despite my jokes. The story is a true coming-of-age tale that may have inspired many, many more animal movies that have taken a festive story to a whole new height. It is a show you will probably at least see once in this lifetime.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer on its 50th Anniversary as one of the great specials in television historyReviewed byraysondVote: 10/10

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of most famous reindeer of them all, what evidence that a blinking red nose can have its benefits?

In December of 1964,as Lyndon B. Johnson prepped for a full term as the President of the United States,The Beatles,as well as The Beach Boys were cranking out hit records, while Julie Andrews,Audrey Hepburn, and Sean Connery packed cinemas in their respective movie hits "Mary Poppins","My Fair Lady",and "Goldfinger"-NBC at the time, took a huge gamble on a unique special that used a stop motion animation style dubbed "Animagic" by producers Arthur Rankin,Jr. and Jules Bass.

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer",premiered on Sunday December 6, 1964 as an NBC Special Presentation in color, and it was the first of many holiday specials that were produced by Rankin-Bass,and was the first to be sponsored by a major company,GE(General Electric). It became a huge hit,and it remain on the Peacock Network for eight years until 1972,when it moved to CBS-TV,where it has aired annually ever since. For many people,it just wouldn't be holidays without the saga of Rudolph's adventurous, tuneful path to guiding Santa's sleigh one foggy Christmas Eve...thanks to his unique schnoz, once an albatross but ultimately being the saving grace of a "Holly Jolly Christmas"(narrated by the great Burl Ives).

Popularized by Gene Autry, composer Johnny Marks' song about without Rudolph would have been famous anyway. The Rankin-Bass production made it even so,paving the way for other "Animagic" shows to follow such as "The Little Drummer Boy","Santa Claus Is Coming To Town","The Year Without A Santa Claus",and its straight animated cartoons like "Frosty The Snowman",and "The Mouse That Saved Christmas". Speaking of the Rankin-Bass 50th Anniversary, let me go over the soundtrack album of this classic television special, which is on Decca Records, and it is also on CD as well. Released around the same time as the special the album to the soundtrack "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" features some great songs that are timeless classics including two selections from Burl Ives("Silver and Gold" and "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas")as well as some great songs from composer Johnny Marks and Maury Laws including "There Always Tomorrow","When Christmas Day Is Here","Couple of Misfits" "We Are Santa's Elves". Great to listen to around the most joyous time of the year.

Charlie in the BoxReviewed bygazzo-2Vote: 7/10

Oh this one is great! I loved it as a kid, and must admit to being scared of the Abominable when he showed round age 5 or so. The parts with Herbie doing the 'Oink oink oink' routine and with Yukon Cornelious are a Scream! (One of my cousins reminds me of Yukon, actually...)

There are some terrific vignettes here-the iceberg drifting off into the northern lights, the Beasts' roaring echoing all round, the Island of Misfit Toys(Charlie in the Box is the best!)...'Bumbles Bounce!'...

Who can not like this? Plus Burl Ives, the one and only. This one will still be shown long after the Beavises of the world are gone.

*** outta ****, a definate watch. +
